Jubilee Cultural Programme in partnership with Bromley Council and BETTER Libraries

As part of the Platinum Jubilee Cultural Programme in Bromley, we partnered with Bromley Council and BETTER libraries to give young people in the borough more opportunities to engage in music making.

In an event facilitated by Bromley Council, young people from our Bromley Academy programme had the chance to perform at the Platinum Jubilee Concert in the Queen’s Gardens, Bromley on Saturday 4th June.

Song-writing and music production courses took place in meeting rooms in Bromley Central Library, Orpington Library and Penge Library during the Easter holiday and May half term. These sessions were part of a project to increase our cultural footprint in certain areas of deprivation in Bromley and to keep young people creative during the school holidays. The groups learnt beginner skills in songwriting and music production with music leaders Damien and Naomi.

Over the three sessions, young people between the ages of 11 and 16 created four new, original songs. The songs were based on the themes of celebration, wellbeing, friendship and growing up. The young people were proud to show their songs to parents and guardians at the end of the session.

One young person commented:

“I don’t feel nervous singing in front of people anymore and I have learnt how to be more confident.”

Naomi (music leader) was proud of the what the young people had achieved.

“I was impressed with the young people’s ability to work collaboratively despite not knowing each other beforehand. They felt comfortable to share their ideas on the songwriting themes and that it was a safe space to do so.”
