Summer term with ArtsTrain

The summer term was a busy few weeks for us at ArtsTrain, delivering rap workshops and songwriting sessions for schools in Bromley.

Exploring rap at Langley Park School for Boys

During the summer term we delivered a rap-based music workshop at Langley Park School for Boys for Year 7-9 students. The workshops were focused on engaging more students with the music department at the school, by exploring rap as a music genre.

The sessions centred around inspiring students to express themselves and write lyrics based on their experiences and hobbies. Our Music Leaders Yasmin and Damien shared their own personal experiences in the music industry. Yasmin shared her journey from her first open mic performance to becoming a renowned spoken word artist and Damien talked about his career as an artist and music producer. We hoped that this inspired the students to try and achieve their career goals in the future.

After we’d prepared a few verses between us, we set up a microphone in the middle of the room and encouraged the students to jump on the mic and share their raps with the other young people.

The students also had the chance to rehearse and record their verses by the end of the morning. It was great to see how engaged, creative and supportive the students were as a group.

“It was an incredibly successful session and the talent, confidence building and creativity was truly incredible!” – Langley Park School for Boys

Songwriting about friendship at Glebe School

In July we visited Glebe School, a SEND school based in Bromley, to deliver two mornings of workshops to Sixth Formers on the theme of friendship.

Music Leaders Phil and Amy Rose delivered the sessions, which were a great chance for the students to bond before they move into a new school year. We started with ice breakers and warm up games, before learning about rhyme and rhythm, and how these are useful tools for songwriting.
