Inclusive music making in Bexley this summer

‍Over the past few weeks, we’ve delivered two inclusive music‑making and songwriting projects in Bexley - one at Woodside School and another with Bexley SNAP. Both programmes gave young people the chance to explore creativity, build confidence and develop new skills through music.

At Woodside School, a specialist school in Bexley for SEND students, our music leaders led three days of songwriting, music production and recording workshops. Young people had the chance to write and produce their own original songs along with drawings and artwork inspired by their music. The project finished with a hands-on session where they filmed their own music video.

From operating the cameras to performing in front of each other, they weren’t just making a music video - they were building confidence, trying new skills and expressing themselves in a way that felt natural. Watching students who were initially unsure become excited to pick up a camera, contribute their own ideas and bring them to life was incredibly rewarding.

‍We also ran three creative sessions at Bexley SNAP, where young people explored music making with a variety of instruments and collaborative songwriting - responding to words and image prompts.

When engaging and collaborating with the young people at Bexley SNAP we made space for musical play and creative exploration. We wrote songs together, played with our voices, words and musical instruments. As an autistic creative and musician I understand the importance of having a place to go that encourages authenticity, understanding and an opportunity for us to embrace and celebrate our differences. It was a joy to work with the young people and staff at Bexley SNAP.

‍ It was nice to see everyone joining in and keeping playing and singing after the session had ended.
